The Field Day Experience - 2016

Does the date of June 25, 2016 mean anything to you?  I hope that by this time you have entered this date and the following of June 26th in your calendar as the ARRL Field Day.  The St. Louis and Suburban Radio Club Field Day will be at Stacy Park from the 25th till the 26th.  We will be starting the set up at 09:30, and start the radio contesting at 13:00.  A special thanks to John Mountain, KJØMTN, for being the chair of this event.  Please contact him at This email address is being protected from spambots. The ARRL Field Day is a combination of a contest and a social event.  For SLSRC, it is more social than contesting.  Per the ARRL website, we are to work as many stations as possible on any and all amateur bands (excluding the 60, 30, 17, and 12-meter bands), and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions.  Field Day is open to all amateurs in the areas covered by the ARRL/RAC Field Organizations and countries within IARU Region 2.  DX stations residing in other regions may be contacted for credit, but are not eligible to submit entries.

The first Field Day was back in 1933.  This gave amateur radio operators the ability to practice their communication abilities without commercial power.  Ham’s would take their generators, antenna masts, antennas, and radios out to make contacts with each other.  From these starting days of Field Day, we have morphed into a contest/social event that we also want to showcase our abilities to the public.

We encourage all people to come and try their hand at operating the radio and scoring some contacts.  We will provide the radios and the control operators to keep you legal. Come out and see people in amateur radio that you have not seen in a while.  I ask that all club members come out and show interest in our visitors, and tell them how you enjoy your hobby.  This really is an opportunity for us, as amateur communicators, to discuss with the public the fun and the use of amateur radio.  The more people that are informed about amateur radio, the more our frequencies will be protected for our use.

Don’t forget that the SLSRC Field Day event will be located at Stacy Park on June 25th and 26th.  We will start setting up at 09:30 with a transmitting start time of 13:00.  Dinner will be on June 25th at 17:00. On the 25th we will also have an educational opportunity for seeing how to build a 2-meter tape measure beam antenna.

Visit the SLSRC.org website to get details.  I hope to see you there.
